Kalesar National Park


A famous birth-watching destination, Kalesar National Park and Sanctuary is one of the excellent spots for bird lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Habitat to the red jungle fowl, the national park and sanctuary is named after the Kalesar (Shiva) Temple positioned in the foot hills of Shiwalik ranges.

Wildlife buffs can enjoy the sights of Sambhar, Chital, Goral, Barking Deer and Nilgai (Blue bull) etc. Rich in flora and fauna, Kalesar National Park and Sanctuary have Khair forest, dense Sal forest and spells of grasslands.

The sanctuary houses many endangered animals like 19 Panthers, Monitor Lizard, about 16 male and female leopards, and King Cobra. Occasional views of tigers and elephants in the park amuse visitors to the park.

Kalesar Forest is probably the only one in Haryana with a natural ‘sal’ tree belt. The main attraction of the park is its 100-year-old colonial dark bungalow that offers a stunning view of the Yamuna River.

In and Around

Kalesar National Park offers a host of activities such as Fishing, Trekking, Sight Seeing, Swimming, Bird Watching and Safari. The tree pie, Horn bills, Blue Peafowl, Drongo, partridges are a great attraction. The Neelgai (Blue Bull), Kakad or Barking deer, Monkeys, Jackal Chital are also found here. This forest covers about 5100 hectars and is the only Sal forest zone in Haryana. There are many flowering trees in the Kalesar National Park, including Dhak, Kachnar and Amaltas. The park mainly has Sal trees, Khair, Shisam, Tun, Sain & Amla trees. Night camping in the park is one of the main exciting features of this place. Tourists also can enjoy the hill trekking with the local guides.

The jungle machan (a small platform built on a high tree to sit and watch the animals) is a great adventurous Attraction for those who wish to watch the animals closely.

October-March is the ideal time for visiting Kalesar.

The KNP is well connected by road from all places in Haryana. Bus Stand in Yamuna Nagar is approximately 40 km (24.85 miles) away from the KNP. Bus and Taxi services are available to reach the park.
