Galathea National Park




Brief


Lying in the islands of Andaman and Nicobar, the Galathea National park is a half segment of well known Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve. The other half segment of the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve is Campbell Bay National park and these two segments are separated by a 12 km long forest. The Galathea National park is situated to the south of Campbell Bay National park just with a margin difference of 12km buffer zone. The park is stretched to about 110sq km and was given the status of being national in 1992.

This Park houses many distinctive and unusual species of plants and animals that are widespread in the island. Some of the important animal species found in the park include the Giant Robber Crab, the Megapode, and the Nicobar Pigeon. The other species of fauna are the Nicobar Scrub-Fowl, the Edible Nest Swift let, the Nicobar Long-Tailed Macaque, Saltwater Crocodile, Giant Leather-Back Sea Turtle, Malayan Box Turtle, Nicobar Tree Shrew and the Reticulated Python are mostly located on the south-western coastline. The immense vegetation present in here makes it a favorite place for the nature lovers, bird watchers and eco-tourists.

Cellular Jail
Infamous because of its history of interning freedom fighters during the Quit India movement, it is now a favourite place of all tourists who visit the islands.

Baratang
Another island which is famous for the sporadic mud volcano which was last active in 2005.

Barren Islands
Though visitors are not permitted to the island, this place is famous for the active volcano. This is the only one active volcano in South East Asia.

Havelock Island
Famous for eco-tourism, has one beach, the Radha Nagar Beach, which has been named the best beach in Asia.

Mount Harriot
There is a Park known for its inhabitants; the salt water crocodiles, turtles and robber crabs.

North Bay Island
The Rajeev Gandhi Water Sports Complex is situated here. The entry to the Complex is Rs.600/- per person. Visitors can go for sea walks, scuba diving and snorkeling.

Carbyns Cove Beach
This is an ideal beach for san bathing and sun basking.

Coral Island
The place is famous for under water corals. This place has a very stunning beach and is good for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Best Time


The best time to visit Galathea National Park is from October to April.

By Air
The nearest airports are in Port Blair city in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chennai and Visakhapatnam cities in India.

By Rail
There is no railway station in Great Nicobar Island. Nearest railway station is Chennai Railway Station in Chennai city of Tamil Nadu, which is approximately 1,623 km (1008 miles) away from the Island.

By Road
The Galathea National Park is not connected by roads. Visitors can reach the sanctuary through ferries provided by authorities from Port Blair. The GNP in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is approximately 523 km (324 miles) away from Port Blair in Andaman archipelago, 1,623 km (1008 miles) away from Chennai and 1,647 km (1023 miles) away from Visakhapatnam cities in India.
